Post from afar

Hello collabbers!

I'm not around at the moment--in Malaysia, actually--but I just wanted to see how things are going, if anything's going, and to--cough--promote--cough--my own blog, so you know what I'm up to, etc. Add me as a friend, thelittleblogofthesea.blogspot.com and please comment! Hope all's well for you across the world.

See you soon,

Mitzi

Hey everyone, I just wanted to wish you all the best
as the show comes together. I wish I could have
been involved again this year, but this school has
consumed me whole. Can't wait to see the work.
GOOD LUCK!

Co/lab show, the prelude.

We are down to the last week everyone! As exciting as it is with the show being 2 Saturdays from now., We have a bunch of work to do so that can happen. I am holding the regular meetings this week plus and extra extended Co/Lab workshop this weekend at my house. If you have been planning to contribute to Co/Lab this is certainly the time. I will be compiling the projects on Tuesday, June 10th. We will begin to load in on June 11th.The ABSOLUTE latest possible day to submit something for the show will be June 13th. Note on people who submit something on the 13th: I will not be able to help you set up your project at Olipom. , so you will have to make y our own arrangements. Don't wait until the n to submit work or help with projectts. Use this week to catch up! Sermon over.

I am so excited to see what we have to show for this year!

PORTRAIT PROJECT UPDATES

sup ya'll.
so people seem to be getting confused about how this is going and who has who and all this garbage, so im hoping i can clean everything up a little.

SIZE: tabloid (11"x17") - vertical orientation!
MEDIA: anything! computer printout, hand drawn, painted, whatever.
STYLE: anything again! the only restriction is that the composition of the person doesn't stray very far from the origin idea of them oriented in the center of the work. this, besides the size and the frames for the work, will be the only consistent part of the project.
SUBMISSION: please bring your finished works to any of the CO/LAB meetings to have them either re-distributed or submitted as a final work to be framed and hung in the show.
GETTING A PERSON'S PHOTO: i have all of the initial 11 photos. scroll through the list of posts to see them, and when you choose someone, if you dont already have their photo, i can send you the high res version of it. again: drcroda@ucdavis.edu

List of peoples pictures on the left!!! List of people working on those pictures on the right!!!
if you dont see your name on the left, please take your picture at a high resolution and email it to drcroda@ucdavis.edu.
if you dont see your name on the right, please leave a comment on this post so that we can have you get your photo claimed so that two people dont end up accidentally working on the same portrait.
1. Devin ----------
2. Corine --------- Kate
3. Cory --------- Rachel
4. Greg --------- Ben
5. Japheth --------- Cory
6. Kate --------- Mitzi
7. Mitzi --------- Greg
8. Rachel --------- Devin
9. Marie --------- Arianna
10. Arianna ---------
11. Oki ---------
12. Co/Lab monster --------- Everyone!

.For the CO/Lab monster, i am going to be making a large lightly outlined print of this and bringing it to the thursday meeting next week so that everyone can start filling it in and adding to it however possible to make the ultimate collaborated portrait of our logo to hang in the center of the photos.

here again is the basic layout of how this will all look on the wall:

i will hopefully have some materials with me next week too to begin building the frames for these photos. suggestions on how this should be created are appreciated. they can either be painted strips of plywood that are put together to make a frame, or out of mat board. it doesnt really matter, just as long as these all look relatively similar as well.

comment, comment, comment, and keep working!
thanks everyone.

22 days until project deadline!

Hey everyone,

Our show date is approaching rapidly and we have much work to do still! If you haven't been showing up to the meetings lately, now is the time to get involved again. Take your mind off of midterms/finals with a couple hours of collaboration. I will be making it easier than ever to participate, as I will be setting up project work stations at my house for the workshop meeting tomorrow. It is not too late to help get projects off the ground, and don't feel like you have to do it all by yourself. Please contact me to help you, I do not have any schoolwork! Co/Lab is my main focus right now so I am here to help you with stuff, if you have an idea please let me know. I must humbly insist that if you wish to have a project up in our next show that you at least stay in touch with me about your progress, because I have to plan out the spacea and if I do not hear from people who are interested in participating, I have to assume that they do not want to have work up. Co/Lab is completely reliant on the participation of its members and if nobody does anything, we don't have a show! Let's not let Olivia down, because she is doing us a favor by giving us Olipom's space and bumping out other artists who wish to have work up in there. This will be an exciting show, so come do something besides classwork and let the world see our collaboration. I would not be saying this if I didn't respect the caliber of work that I have seen from people in Co/Lab and I would love to give them an outlet for their hard work. I apologize for this long winded post, but I am passionate about this group and want to see us through a successful second show! Anyway, next meeting is Tuesday at 7, be there or be^2. Peace!

2nd Saturday and what's next

Hey Everyone,

Well we sold some sock monkeys at Olipom this weekend. We still have several left, and we plan to sell them on campus and on our show date. The space is really cool, and Olivia is excited to work with us on setting stuff up. We still have a month to complete our projects (see list below) and I am going to be working on some advertising materials, with the help of everyone else of course! Starting now we will be working to update the look of this blog for the show, making handbill flyers and doing a few guerrilla marketing campaigns to spread the word. Please talk to your friends and let them know the show date: June 14th. Now is the time to come to meetings and work together to get our projects done before June 9th. Also, if you haven't already, get photos of collabers to work on for the portrait project. You can get them from Devin or from me. The next meeting is Tuesday at 7 at my house! Hope to see you all there!

Devin's Portrait Project

Please pick one and comment with your choice, so that each person has a photo to work with, and so no one is accidentally working on the same one! (Note by Milan - include your email or contact Devin and he will email you the portrait file.)

And for everyone who doesn't have a photo here, please take one in the same style, and post it up for download so we can get your portrait circulatin'.

Once you're done you may resubmit your recreated work to be hyper re-created by another co/lab member, or you can submit a final.

Sock Monkey Updates

Our sock monkeys are growing in numbers (slowly). More help would be greatly appreciated =) If you guys remember how to make them, grab some socks and add to the pile! Here is a link with instructions if you don't remember. Also, we will be getting Co/Lab buttons soon! We will be using them for the eyes and also for passing out and such. And, we are planning to sell the Sock Monkeys for Second Saturday, so see you guys there!

New URL & Venue Viewing

EDIT: My mistake! May 10th is 2nd Saturday! Obviously, second, saturday. der.
______________

Good morning all,
Milan here. Just a quick announcement that the url has finally changed from 07 to 08 (an easier adjustment than I thought), and that Second Saturday is this week, Saturday May 3rd from about 6-10 pm. It's going to be great weather this weekend, so carpool, grab a drink, walk around the spring night, have a late dinner in Downtown Sac.

Most importantly, I highly encourage you to check out our venue OLIPOM and get a feel of the space and optimize your projects around that. =) The better we plan the more fun we'll have. (I sound like my mom, ugh)

Alrighty y'all, forgive me for the mass emails and such, but I feel inspired to get more involved. I got a good feeling about this =)

peace,
Milan

PS) Thank gosh for the new second saturday website, if any of your remember what it used to look like. Whew!

oki's project ideas

so I had a lot of ideas but I've narrowed it down

1) ART VIDEO- the subject matter is hair. it should be fun and weird and i need people to be in it and to help me with the technical stuff. ask me more in person or see cory he has a piece of paper with details. a lot of the acting is just moving around and dealing with costume. some of it doesn't even involve your face so don't be afraid to participate if you are camera shy.

2) IMAGINARY MAP- yes! lets make an imaginary map! using many mediums! full of dangerous creatures too.

3) ZINE- this is an ongoing project that I want to get started but it could be done for next year. I want ideas and input and help though.

Milan, Semar, and potential others - Installation in the works...

So Milan and I figured that since we are unable to frequent the meetings as much as we want to, we wanted to be able to make work still regardless of that fact. We are actually in a very convenient living situation, so why not work on a major project together.

What we are thinking of doing is working on a window installation with an emphasis on an oriental aesthetic and subtle details. We are primarily using wood contructions and paper. Generally, it will be a very very fancy frame that surrounds an image yet to be discussed, but definitely the actual window will be the main focus. We have talked about how we like white on white paintings and want to simulate that on the window panels via seperate, intricate folds and patterns.

Milan and I are still fleshing out the project, so hopefully construction will start very soon once the concept is solid. We'll keep you guys posted.

Project Updates: Post a Comment!

Hey All,

Let this be our project check-in post. Leave a comment giving your status; it can be a description of your idea/concept, a status report of where you are on your project, or even "I'm stumped"/"Help me". This helps us all to organize and see each others' work as well as let me know where people are, and who needs some guidance. If you are planning to do a project but haven't a clue where to start, please let us know in a comment.

$100 grid

http://swissmiss.typepad.com/weblog/2008/04/ten-thousand-ce.html

I saw this and it reminded me of Sam's poster thing last year where everyone took a particular square and filled it according to the given colors and within the lines.

Project Updates and ideas

Hey guys, Justin here. So here are my ideas:

Exquisite Chain - a chain reaction style poster based on the idea of exquisite corpse.
Rusting Statue - Using metal and it's ability to rust to create an interesting sculpture.
Album Covers - Create a series of album covers for fun.
Second Saturday promo - Make a scavenger hunt style game so second saturday people explore the area to find us so they can get a free tshirt.

This is the status of each project:

Exquisite Chain - being slow, need to get the first segment out soon, but don't know how to start. (creators block)
Rusting statue - Drawing and design phase, working with Me, Tracy, and Lex.
Album Covers - New idea, need to find people who want to work on this.
Second Saturday Promo - Need to talk to people about it, but I think it should be easy to pull off.

So there you go. A very brief and confusing status update for you all. Any questions feel free to ask, but no guarantees my answer will be any better.

Flier & T-Shirt Graphics

Hey All,
Just posting my flier and t-shirt graphics for all to see, critique, enjoy, etc.

Flier—I put Walker 135 just as a filler location since I made this back in January. This version here is letter size, but I did originally make it in a tabloid size.

A couple t-shirt graphics I came up with. It's a flexible design so the star shape could be either way. And yes, they look a bit like Shepard Fairey's 'Obey Giant' since I've really been interested in his work/style as of late.

I chose not to use to use the normal Din font that you usually see Co/LAB written in as these aren't as much of a logo and just a graphic. And I tend to get bored with the same typeface all of the time.

Alright, that's my $.02.

Wii Wipeboard- take 2

Hey,
Justin and I finally got the wii wipeboard program to work. We had to go to radio shack to buy an IR LED and a switch. Drawing works well as long as your hand is not in-between the pen tip and the wiimote. We might try tweaking the program to use 2 wiimotes so that there's not a problem of blocking the light. Here's some pics.
